NEW Solar Workstation
Ultrafast laser beam induced current (LBIC) mapping is carried out with a laser spot having a diameter of 40 micron that is modulated over a surface to create a map. The accessible wavelength range is 400-1100 nm. In the standard configuration a wavelength of 410 nm is employed with a testing area of 30 x 30 cm2. The practical resolution is < 100 micron and depends on the surface of the solar cell. The infinityPV approach to LBIC is inherently immune to noise and enable mapping of concave and convex PV surfaces which is ideal for flexible solar cells. Rough front window surfaces with scattering gives rise to conformably mapped error signals and must be minimized.
The system is controlled using the infinityPV software that is preinstalled on the laptop PC that is included. The system is fully CE approved and accepts line voltages in the range of 110-240 VAC (single phase).
Modules and single cells are easily characterized rapidly and with a large degree of immunity to external light input. The optical resolution is always < 100 micron but can be chosen to be lower in cases where imaging speed is favoured i.e. during quick overview scans where 30 x 30 cm2 is typically scanned in a few seconds. High resolution imaging of a 30 x 30 cm2 area takes a few minutes. The software has a large number of scanning modes that involves choice of both optical and electrical handling. The system is ideally suited for single junctions but allows for mapping of modules also (differences in junction ideality may lead to differences in signal strength between different junctions in a module). The LBIC maps allow for easy identification of defects, coating errors, shunts and photovoltaically inactive regions. It is ideal for highlighting failure over time of solar cells and modules that have been subjected to accelerated ageing tests i.e. ingress of permeants and contact failure is easily identified.
