Roll-to-Roll Coater Drives Breakthrough in Perovskite Solar Cell Manufacturing

Graphene-Enhanced Perovskite Solar Cells

Halocell Energy, in collaboration with Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and First Graphene Limited, is using the infinityPV Tabletop Roll-to-Roll Coater (since evolved into the Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater) to pioneer the next generation of graphene-enhanced perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The system provides the precision and scalability needed to move research advances into commercial products. By integrating functionalized graphene, Halocell has achieved 30.6 percent efficiency while cutting production costs by up to 80 percent.

Precision Coating for Advanced Materials

The Tabletop Roll-to-Roll Coater supports roll-to-roll dispersion technology that eliminates costly metals such as gold and silver, while enabling reproducible, high-quality coating of thin films. This controlled process is critical for incorporating graphene into PSC layers, ensuring reliable device performance. The coater bridges laboratory-scale R&D with industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing, making it ideal for both prototyping and scale-up.

Scalable Manufacturing and Market Impact

With the help of the infinityPV coater, Halocell has launched perovskite products to the Australian market, starting with indoor, low-light applications such as remotes, e-readers, and tracking devices. The technology is also being developed for advanced uses including drones, satellites, and biomedical sensors. Halocell plans modular expansion of its Wagga Wagga facility to manufacture up to 60 million PSC units annually, with the coater serving as the foundation for this growth.

Enabling Sustainable Photovoltaics

By combining graphene innovation with the versatility of the infinityPV Tabletop Roll-to-Roll Coater, Halocell has built a scalable and sustainable solar cell platform. The coater empowers new material development, accelerates commercialization, and strengthens Australia’s sovereign manufacturing capability, while delivering a pathway to low-cost, high-performance solar energy solutions.
