SOLiTHOR Develops Solid-State Battery Materials Using a Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater

SOLiTHOR is a deep-tech startup in Belgium focused on the development of high energy density, solid-state batteries based on our proprietary manufacturing process and a patented, sol-gel-based solid composite electrolyte technology. Our technology is well-suited for roll-to-roll processing aligned with state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies used for lithium-ion batteries.

The Need or Challenge

To demonstrate the processibility and build the upscaling strategy for our electrolyte coating, we needed a lab-scale, slot-die coating unit that was suitable for battery film  manufacturing. Our technology roadmap included screening a wide range of coating and drying methods, with the goal of identifying optimal conditions for roll-to-roll processing of our composite cathode and solid composite electrolytes.

Choosing the Product

We chose infinityPV’s LR2RC1500 coating unit after an exhaustive search. The ability of this unit to coat battery materials, its modular architecture, and a range of components and accessories available through infinityPV, were key factors that drove this selection. Another attractive feature was its compact size, which makes it easy to handle with limited manpower and allows for installation inside a fume-hood when needed.

Experience with the Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater

We find the product flexible and easy to use, with components and accessories that can be switched with minimal effort and time to allow for fast screening. The range of processing conditions is also wide, which helps significantly with process optimization trials. Within only a few months, we have been able to identify optimal processing conditions of our composite cathode and solid electrolyte meeting our high, internal quality standards.

Experience with InfinityPV

infinityPV has supported us well throughout the installation and commissioning of the equipment, and through troubleshooting any problems that we have encountered along the way. Our communication with Jon has been satisfactory; he is highly knowledgeable and has addressed every question quickly and efficiently.

Results and Recommendations

Since the installation of the machine, in the past 18 months, we have swiftly moved from preparing small, hand-made sheets of our composite cathode and solid electrolyte to producing wound rolls of up to several meters in length with consistent quality, and high reproducibility and yield. We highly recommend this setup to anyone looking to demonstrate proof-of-concept and to develop roll-to-roll process of battery components.
