E-magy Accelerates Silicon Anode Innovation and Enhances Battery Performance with Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater

Advancing Next-Generation Silicon Anode Batteries

E-magy is reshaping the future of Li-ion batteries with its advanced nanostructured silicon anode material, enabling higher energy density, faster charging, and more sustainable battery production. As a company deeply rooted in material science and innovation, E-magy continually advances both core silicon technology and the battery fabrication processes that demonstrate its full potential.

The Need for Precision and Repeatability

Scaling from small-format pouch cells to larger, industry-relevant battery formats required far more sophisticated coating capabilities. E-magy needed a laboratory system that could ensure precise, repeatable deposition of battery slurries over long, double-sided substrates. Consistency, process control, and the ability to fine-tune variables were essential to support internal qualification programs and to deliver coated electrodes that reflect customer manufacturing environments.

Modular R2R Coater for Consistent, High-Quality Coatings

To meet these demands, E-magy adopted the Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater from infinityPV. The system offered the ideal balance between compact laboratory operation and the capabilities of larger pilot-scale equipment. Its modular architecture allowed seamless adjustment of process parameters, enabling rapid optimization as slurry formulations evolved. With accurate control of tension, coating, and drying conditions, the coater provided a reliable platform for producing high-quality, scalable electrode coatings.

E-magy’s Experience with the Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater

Jurgen Poen, Battery Process Engineer, shares his experience:

My name is Jurgen Poen and I work in the Internal Battery Qualification department at E-magy, where I develop slurry mixing and coating technologies to further enhance battery performance and demonstrate our material in relevant Li ion batteries.
As we transit from small 0.15 Ah pouch cells to larger cell formats, we had to increase our coating capability from single sided, single sheet lab-scale coating to double-sided, several meter long coatings. In this way, we are able to keep up with our own internal qualification demand and also to produce cells that could be used by interested parties or potential customers. Double sided coatings are the standard in the cell making industry, and therefore bring us closer to our customers' requirements and needs.
We chose the Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater from infinityPV because it nicely sits between sheet coating machines and the usually bigger lab scale equipment offered by other suppliers. The machine is also very modular in set-up, which makes it a lot easier to change things in the process without changing the whole machine.
We are definitely able to make longer coatings, and we are progressing with process development towards a high quality level for the coatings. As expected, this requires some patience to establish the exact process parameters of the equipment in relation to the slurry properties. The Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater lab coater is very useful in its capabilities to adjust and control the settings and the trials can be executed in a very efficient way.
Support by infinityPV has always been perfect! From the moment I first contacted the company, up to now that we have the machine. Whenever I have a question, I will always get an answer. We also were most welcome to do some trials at the premises of infinityPV when we were considering buying such a machine. We are very happy with the support of infinityPV.
We have been able to make coatings, and we enjoy the accuracy and flexibility of the Laboratory Roll-to-Roll Coater. I would definitely recommend this system to others, it is very easy to understand and operate.

— Jurgen Poen, Battery Process Engineer at E-magy
